The money you never get back, and the dates that decide whether you do

Every festival ends holding money that belonged to somebody who went home.

Some of it is unspent credit on a wristband. Some of it is a ticket that could have been refunded until a particular minute on a particular evening. None of it comes back on its own, and nobody is going to write to you about it.

Here is where it actually goes, from the festivals' own pages.

A cashless balance does not refund itself

The wristband model is the same everywhere: money goes on before you buy anything, and whatever is left at the end is still yours until you fail to ask for it.

Every festival handles the asking differently, and that is the whole problem.

At UNTOLD, you can get it in person. In 2026 there were three ways: at any Credit Point on your way out, at the Resolution Point during the festival, or on the Monday afterwards at the Ticketing Point near the Hungarian Opera, between 07:00 and 17:00. At Electric Castle, you cannot. There are no cash refunds at all. The balance comes back by bank transfer, through a form, and in 2026 that form was open from 16 July to 2 August. Miss it and the money simply stays with the festival. Two festivals, one country, three weeks apart, and completely opposite rules. That is why "the festival will refund it" is not a fact about festivals.

The single date that costs the most money: the ticket refund deadline

Glastonbury publishes theirs plainly, and it is the clearest example we found of a line you cannot cross.

For 2025, tickets were non refundable after 23:59 on Friday 9 May. Not approximately. A minute.

Before that deadline you could refund, but not for free: a £25 administration charge was retained. The same deadline governed the extras. Car park passes and campervan pitches were refundable prior to it, tipis likewise with the same £25 charge.

And there is a detail that only bites people who did not read it in time. Any ticket whose balance was never paid was automatically refunded, minus the £25, and the ticket went back into the pool. So forgetting to pay the balance is not a way of quietly keeping your place.

Refund protection is sold at one moment and never again

Glastonbury offers Refund Protection at £8.99 per person for general admission, and their page carries a sentence that matters more than the price:

It is only available when making a balance payment or a full ticket booking.

So it is not something you can decide to add in April once the weather forecast looks wrong. There is one window in which you can buy it, and it is the same moment you are paying for something else and least likely to be reading carefully. They also suggest checking whether you are already covered elsewhere, which is a fair thing for them to say and worth doing.

What this means in practice

Four things, and all four are calendar entries rather than decisions.

1. Put the wristband refund window in your phone before you travel, not after. At Electric Castle in 2026 it closed on 2 August, a full two weeks after the festival ended, and by then nobody is thinking about it.
2. Find out whether your festival refunds in person or by transfer. If it is by transfer, you need bank details and a form, not a walk to a booth.
3. Know your ticket refund deadline the day you buy. It is a fixed date and time, months in advance, and it does not move.
4. Decide about refund protection at the moment of payment, because that is the only moment it is offered.

What we cannot tell you yet

None of the 2027 refund deadlines exist yet. Glastonbury has not published one, because it has not published ticket information at all, and says that comes in autumn 2026. UNTOLD is selling 2027 passes already but has not republished its event rules for that edition.

We are not carrying this year's dates forward and calling them next year's. When the 2027 rules are published we will read them and this page will change, with the change dated.
